Refurb

I have not always been a fan of old 'stuff'.
I am more an out with the old, in the the brand-new kinda girl.
But seeing how people have refurbished old stuff
is amazing!

I have a dressing table and dresser that belonged to my Grandma.
They were always in her bedroom and I have good memories of them.
I got her dressing table when she moved out of her house and into
her apartment a few years back.

Then I got her dresser when she passed away in December.
Both pieces are sitting in our *unfinished, dirty* basement
and it makes me so sad that they are not being loved and used.

They are old and need some TLC, paint, something.
They are not the best quality or the best-made pieces either.
So I am not sure what I can or should do with them.
But they mean a lot to me.

I really really love the brightly painted furniture styles
I see nowadays like this one

Or the distressed pieces like this

I REALLY love this funky piece

Not sure where I'd put it but....I would LOVE that in my house!
; )

My hubby thinks I need to keep the 'art deco-ish' pattern on the pieces
which I probably should but I'm not sure if I am huge fan of.
But yet, I feel like I should preserve that part of them.

The dilemmas!
I am terrible at envisioning the potential in something old
so I'm hoping my hubby, who is good at that stuff,
or one of my wonderful followers...!
Can give me some inspiration.

Have you ever refurbished a piece of furniture?

I would think pinterest would be your best source for inspiration on revamping this original piece which is gorgeous. Do you have HGTV channel in Canada? Sometimes they have shows that focus on refurbishing old pieces?

Not yet!

But I think it would look very nice with color all over - like in the last pic!

Courage!

Hi Sheri

You know I think it needs to be loved the way you want to love it.

I mean - do to it something that you would LOVE looking at every day.
The fact that it is your grandmothers is the best part - it doesn't have to stay looking the same.

I can imagine it in brights (love that red table) or white only and use it for all your art journalling pieces in a workroom space or corner of creativity for yourself and the girls perhaps.

Maybe - Take the old handles off and keep them as a keepsake of the originality and repaint it to what you would love to look at each and every day and new modern handles too.

Gosh I could even seeit as a towel cabinet in a bathroom painted white.

hope my 2 cents worth helps
(ps underneath the desk area, write your grandmothers dates on it or the date she gave it to you and then the date you renovate it.....

hugs

Have a wonderful day,

So special that you've been left something that was part of your grandmother's life ... this is what I would do. I would have a nice photo (or several) taken of the piece as it is right now. It can be artistically done so that it would be something that you perhaps might want to frame with a quote or something that says your grandma. That way you've preserved the memory of what that piece was to her. Then, you're free to make the piece whatever you'd like in order for it to bring joy to your life. Love the brightly colored piece! Good luck {and thanks, Sheri, for stopping by Ooh La Frou Frou!} ~xoSM

I just finished refurbishing an old piece (I blogged about it here: http://elizaoverthemoon.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/restoration-furniture.html.

I love the natural look of wood, so I'm the wrong person to give inspiration. But Evie, over at "Post College Working Girl" is amazing at this sort of stuff. Her link is:

Haven't refurbished anything ever, but love to state in wonderment at what people have done... hint, hint (or more blatantly, don't forget to post the 'after' photos!)

Maybe if you put a varnish it would look new. =)

Sheri, that piece is awesome! I've never refurbished anything. Just think about what room you want to put it in. What is the color scheme there and then brainstorm some ideas. I really love that red look, but it's hard for me to say, without envisioning the room. Thank you so much for voting for me. I won! I appreciate your help girl. ((HUG))
